Sacramento Valley Chapter of CSEA

Sacramento Valley Chapter of CSEA

Mission Statement:

The mission of the California Society of Enrolled Agents is to foster the professionalism, business development, and personal growth of its Members, to protect the interests of the individual Members of the Society, and to enhance the awareness and role of the Enrolled Agent among members of the public, other professions, and with government agencies.

What is an Enrolled Agent?
An Enrolled Agent (EA) is an individual who has demonstrated technical competence in the field of taxation. Enrolled Agents, or EAs, can represent taxpayers before all administrative levels of the Internal Revenue Service.

What does the term "Enrolled Agent" mean?
"Enrolled" means EAs are licensed by the federal government. "Agent" means EAs are authorized to appear in place of the taxpayer at the Internal Revenue Service. Only EAs, attorneys and CPAs may represent taxpayers before the IRS. The Enrolled Agent profession dates back to 1884 when, after questionable claims had been presented for Civil War losses, Congress acted to regulate persons who represented citizens in their dealings with the Treasury Department.

Sac-Tax NewsGroup Launched

Dave Fogel has invited our members to be a part of a new Yahoo Group for tax topics. This invitation only group is just in time for the filing season, and promises provide us with the best tax information, education and discussion that we could ever hope for. Prepare to be educated by the best, and have a venue for discussion on the difficult tax topics that are destined to find their way into our tax season. This will be a way for us to network as well, and find out more about our members and their areas of expertise and specialization…

Dave Fogel, EA, CPA, has started up a new Yahoo! Group known as “Sac-Tax.” As some of you may know, Dave was Chair of the Taxation Committee for the CalCPA Sacramento Chapter from May 2009 to October 2011, and was one of the moderators of a Yahoo! Group known as SacCPA from its inception to November 2011. He received many requests from participants in these two groups asking him to start up a discussion forum that's devoted solely to tax-related subjects.

The Sac-Tax group is a private group. That means that only members of the group can send and receive messages. The group is not affiliated with any other tax or accounting organizations. Membership in the group is open to all tax professionals, including CPAs, EAs, CTEC members, attorneys, RTRPs, fiduciaries, etc., in the Metropolitan Sacramento area who wish to participate in, or subscribe to, tax-related discussions. For example, if you have a tax question that you haven’t been able to answer after conducting some research, and you’d like to have input from other tax professionals, then you would simply send an email message to the group asking your question, and the members will discuss it and provide answers.

If you wish to join the Sac-Tax group, please send an email to Sac-Tax-subscribe@yahoogroups.com with your request to join. In response, you’ll receive a message asking you to confirm your request to join the Sac-Tax group. When you click on the link "Join this group!" you'll be taken to a Yahoo! Groups page (your browser must be set to accept “cookies”) that will ask you to either (1) join the Sac-Tax group and get access to all of the group’s Web tools such as Message Archives, Polls, Files and Photos, or (2) just join the mailing list. If you request full access (recommended), you will need to obtain a Yahoo! Groups ID if you don’t already have one (to obtain a Yahoo! Groups ID, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/ and click on "Register" at the top left of the page). Then, provide the information to request membership in the Sac-Tax group to complete the approval process. Initially, Dave Fogel will act as moderator of this group, but additional moderators may be added as necessary.

Once your membership in the Sac-Tax group has been approved, whenever you have a tax-related question or comment that you want to send to the group, send your email to:

Sac-Tax@yahoogroups.com

The system will automatically distribute the message, along with any attachments, to the other members of the Sac-Tax group. When you or someone else replies to the message, the reply will be distributed to the members. You’ll know that a message came from the Sac-Tax group because [Sac-Tax] (in square brackets) will appear in the subject line of the message.

You can choose to receive individual emails (the default setting), or a daily digest of emails, or no emails (such as when you’re on vacation) by logging in to Yahoo! Groups and editing your settings for the Sac-Tax group (another reason to get a Yahoo! Groups ID). If you elect to receive a daily digest of emails, you won’t receive any attachments to the emails if there are any. Instead, you’ll have to login to Yahoo! Groups to view the email and its attachment(s). If you don't want to obtain a Yahoo! Groups ID but want to edit your settings, then please contact Dave Fogel directly at dfogel@surewest.net after going through the membership approval process and he’ll be happy to change your settings for you.

Sac-Tax members should conduct their own tax research before posting a question for discussion. This forum and its members are not responsible for any advice or information published here that members use in providing tax advice to others. Pursuant to Circular 230 (31 C.F.R. Part 10), any tax advice provided by members of this group in discussions (including any attachments) is not intended or written to be used, and cannot be used, for the purpose of avoiding penalties imposed under the Internal Revenue Code or promoting, marketing or recommending to another party any transaction or matter addressed therein.
